 Andy “Zig” Leipzig

Contemporary Artist | Zig Studios | Twisted Chrome Pinstripes

Andy “Zig” Leipzig creates work that moves fluidly between classical painting traditions and the bold, media-saturated realities of today. Born in Brooklyn in 1957, he brings an intuitive eye, technical precision, and a wry sense of humor to pieces that feel both timeless and sharply contemporary.

Before devoting himself fully to fine art, Zig built a career as a high-level art director and graphic designer in the aerospace and defense sector. At Grumman Aerospace and later Northrop Grumman(Space Systems Division and Electronics & Systems Integration), he crafted marketing visuals, technical illustrations, and campaign materials that helped secure more than a billion dollars in contracts for clients including NASA, major automotive racing divisions, JBL, and every branch of the U.S. military. That immersion in large-scale visual persuasion and commercialization profoundly shaped his later artistic voice.

Zig’s paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works are often described as surreal, pop-infused, and quietly subversive. He layers classical techniques and compositional elegance with contemporary references, anachronistic details, and sharp commentary on consumer culture, branding, perception, and the strange allure of modern life. The result is art that creates subtle friction—images that feel familiar yet disorienting, frequently humorous, sometimes tender, and almost never preachy. He has said the surprise or laughter often belongs to the viewer: “Funny, it may be said, lies in the beholder.”

He approaches medium and style with complete freedom—traditional oils and acrylics alongside digital layering, collage, found imagery, and sculptural elements—believing tools are simply extensions of intent. The aim is mood, narrative, and emotional resonance rather than stylistic purity.

This same design-driven spirit powers Twisted Chrome Pinstripes, his long-running custom vinyl pinstriping and decal company (twistedchrome.com). For over two decades, Zig has produced high-performance, precut, UV-coated vinyl transfers that replicate the look of hand-painted pinstriping—featuring hundreds of original designs used on motorcycles, cars, hot rods, guitars, helmets, and more.
